It was quite common for families to reuse names, if the first person who got the name died young. That's why Jane has two uncles named John. One died at age three, and the other was born the year after his brother's death, so he got the name. If at first you don't succeed...
By the way, the notation (d @ #) indicates the person's age at death. Anyone without this notation is still alive, in which case a number in parantheses indicates current age. Just to avoid confusion, the first "Jane Barnes" listed, who died at age 13, is not my character. That's her aunt, whom she never met, and after whom she was named.

After Jane's grandmother, Mary Towle Barnes died, her grandfather remarried. As widower with five children, ranging in age from 14 years old to less than 12 months, he really needed a wife! His choice was Katherine Powell Southy, a widow with a young daughter. Here is their family:

Because the children of Jane's grandfather's second marriage were so close in age to the children in her family, they often played together. This friendship contributed to a tragedy when Jane's brother John and her uncle Matthew were drowned together in a boating accident, as neither could swim.
