The Foundations of Civilization
One of my former co-workers, Greg Kucharo, once challenged anyone interested to
compile a list of personal Foundations of Civilization. He specified that the
list contain the 42 things you feel you could not possibly be civilized without,
in no particular order. The number 42 was, of course, suggested by Douglas
Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Alas, Greg has abandoned this
noble idea for the moment and is flirting with Great Architecture instead.
However, before Greg defected, I had already created the following list of
Foundations of Civilization,
and at least a few other people are at work on their personal lists. I'd be
happy to put in links to other people's lists on this page, so if you have a
list of your own, please
mail me the URL.
Jim Swonger e-mailed me his list in progress, so check out
Jim's current list
now and I'll put up his finished version if he sends it in once he completes it.

You can send e-mail to me at

have any comments or ideas you want to share. It will take me a while to
respond to them, because my Internet access is a bit limited right now,
but I will answer if you send me your address!
